Iowa State University Students Finalists in Nationwide Banking Competition

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State University students were finalists in a nationwide 2017 Community Bank Case Study Competition.

The Iowa State team’s case study submission is among five teams out of 33 to advance to the final competition in New Orleans. The other teams include Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Kutztown University, Texas Tech University and the University of Akron.

Students on the team include: John Bebel, a May graduate in finance from Eagan, Minnesota; Callen Duffy, an agricultural business junior from Eagan, Minnesota; Timothy Dwyer, a May graduate in engineering from Woodstock, Illinois; James Howell, a senior in economics from Ames; and Mengyu Wang, a senior in aerospace engineering from Ames.

The students partnered with Ames National Corporation, which is affiliated with several central Iowa banks. Peter Orazem, a University Professor in economics, and Katherine Lacy, a graduate assistant in economics, served as the team’s faculty advisers.

The Iowa State team will be competing for $1,000 scholarships at the Conference of State Bank Supervisors conference. The first, second and third place winning teams will be announced May 25 on Twitter during the annual state and federal banking regulator forum.

The Community Bank Case Study Competition is an annual competition that provides undergraduate students the opportunity to explore the field of banking with local banks and conduct case studies. The 2017 competition focused on management and board succession planning at local community banks.
